Ecocide Series – Tropic Toxic, 2024
This series of paintings translates into images our Anthropocene era, which brings with it political and environmental awareness. This body of philosophical paintings with Anthropocene aesthetics takes us on a fascinating journey of contaminated landscapes. This impact is manifested by toxic fluorescent petrochemical hues, contrasting with untamed wild spaces: lush jungles, a sort of heavenly ancestral hubris, the fruit of daydreams and extrapolations. The acidulous colors of toxic gases invade the tropics of the garden of delights. Overconsumed fruit of the earth. A sublime that has undergone the transition from natural to artificial, inscribed in landscapes that hint, through the presence of plants, at their true natural vocation. The scenes evoke a teeming plant universe where the air, the characters, and the animals display the experience of profound environmental degradation. This era of uncertainty, this geological age, by its nature escapes the spatial and temporal scales of humans, and subsequently our capacities for apprehension. Indeed, Art probably has its role to play in the processes of representing the world, and of collective awareness. The questioning of the centrality of Man, of our relationships with Nature, and of our destiny as a species concerns us. In this state of generalized vagueness, collective concerns are at the heart of the relationships between the environment, society and humanities. By wanting to make beautiful what is not and cannot be without trivializing the critical scope, the toxic sublime produces a contrast, it simultaneously shows beauty and ugliness.
